Breasts that are too large: More than an aesthetic problem
What may be a dream for some women can be a burden for others: markedly enlarged breasts that can affect body and mind. In addition to a hereditary predisposition, tissue weakness or pregnancy and breastfeeding can be reasons why the breasts are oversized or remain so and sag or become deformed under their own weight.
Possible physical complaints can include pain in the back, neck or shoulders, which can, in some cases, promote posture problems and spinal complaints. Freedom of movement during sports can also be restricted. Besides skin irritations, wearing a bikini or form-fitting clothing in public can become difficult. The looks of others can also lead to insecurity and noticeably burden everyday life.
Dr. Christoph Jethon at PraxisClinic Jadore can help alleviate the mentioned complaints and improve personal well-being with a breast reduction.

The operation for a successful breast reduction in detail
Breast reduction (mammoreduction) is basically comparable to the surgical procedure of a breast lift: fatty tissue and excess skin are removed – however, glandular tissue is additionally removed to model the smaller breast. The required measures always take the individual female anatomy into account. For example, in order to lift sagging breasts, the breast base is narrowed and the glandular body is remodelled. If necessary, Dr. Christoph Jethon also adjusts overstretched or too large nipples to the new breast shape and size to create a naturally appearing contour.
If body growth is complete and the breasts are fully developed, this procedure can in principle be performed at any age. Ideally, however, the surgical reduction should be carried out after completed family planning, since the swelling and shrinking of the breasts during pregnancy can undo the previously achieved positive result. If, however, very large breasts already represent a severe physical and psychological burden at a young age, the breast operation should not be postponed.
After the procedure the breast often appears fuller and lifted. Many patients subsequently report both physical and emotional relief.
Common side effects and risks of a breast reduction
The incisions required for surgical breast reduction usually cause slight pain and also increase sensitivity at rest, especially during arm or upper body movements. After a few days these subside. They are often accompanied by swelling of the tissue and bruising; both are harmless and also disappear.
The scars resulting from the operation remain visible for some time during the healing process, but over time they then almost completely fade – the special technique Dr. Christoph Jethon uses when suturing the incisions can significantly reduce their optical prominence.
Relocation of the nipples can cause temporary sensory disturbances; breastfeeding ability can also be somewhat impaired after the operation – however, Dr. Christoph Jethon particularly emphasizes that nipple sensitivity as well as the ability to breastfeed are preserved in a breast reduction.
Your path with Dr. Christoph Jethon to an attractive reduced breast
The realization of your wish for an aesthetically pleasing smaller breast with Dr. Christoph Jethon at PraxisClinic Jadore will take place in several steps, all of which together aim for the successful reduction of your breast.
Your personal preliminary consultation with Dr. Christoph Jethon for a breast reduction
Before your planned surgical breast reduction, Dr. Christoph Jethon conducts a detailed consultation with you at PraxisClinic Jadore. He takes time for you so that he can learn your wishes and personal ideas precisely; he explains whether and how these can be carried out by him and what the ideal path to your desired result looks like.
Dr. Jethon will explain the most suitable surgical method for breast reduction and will also inform you about the resulting costs. A medical history is used to clarify all possible risks of the operation that could arise from your medical background. Possible allergies to medications or care substances are also taken into account, as well as the required anesthesia. Additionally, Dr. Christoph Jethon advises you on what you can do yourself to optimally prepare for the procedure.
How to best prepare yourself for the breast reduction procedure
You can do a lot yourself to support the healing process after the surgical breast reduction. It is best to take the following notes into consideration already in advance:
Nutrition and body weight
The human breast consists, in addition to a portion of glandular tissue, also of fatty tissue. While the glandular portion is genetically determined, the fatty tissue portion mainly depends on your dietary habits. If you plan to diet after a breast reduction in order to lose weight, the reduced breast may later again lose tension and also volume. Therefore, you should have reached your feel-good or ideal weight before the operation so that you remain satisfied with the result of your breast reduction in the long term.
Medication intake
About 2 weeks before your surgery date you should stop taking all medications that increase bleeding tendency – for example aspirin or any products containing acetylsalicylic acid – as well as sleeping pills. Of course this does not affect medically prescribed and health-necessary medications; you should continue taking those and inform Dr. Jethon about them.
Tobacco and alcohol
Regular tobacco consumption increases the risk of circulatory disorders and also delays wound healing. Both can impair the healing process after the operation. Therefore you should give up smoking completely or significantly reduce it at least 2 weeks before the operation. Regular alcohol consumption can also delay the healing process.
Additional examinations
An ultrasound examination before the operation is useful to detect possible tissue changes. In individual cases a supplementary mammography is also recommended.
Checklist for preparation:
- Possibly a diet in advance to lose weight
- Avoid sleeping pills as well as all blood-thinning medications
- Restrict or stop tobacco and alcohol consumption
- Ultrasound examination, possibly also mammography
How does the breast reduction operation proceed?
Before the operation Dr. Christoph Jethon precisely marks the individual incision lines on your breast; this is sensibly done while you are standing so that the breast reduction creates the appearance you desire in a natural posture. Afterwards you receive general anesthesia so that you will not perceive the surgical procedure.
The duration of the operation at PraxisClinic Jadore is about 3 hours depending on the measures agreed with you. Dr. Christoph Jethon will perform these himself and will make only as many incisions as are actually necessary to reduce the breast and remodel it accordingly, giving it a natural appearance.
Usually a vertical incision from the areola to the inframammary fold is sufficient. If a large excess of skin must also be removed, an additional horizontal incision in the inframammary fold is necessary. Occasionally it is also sensible to perform an additional liposuction on the side of the chest wall.
Finally, Dr. Jethon sutures all incisions intracutaneously so that the surgical scars are hardly visible once the healing process is fully complete. To protect the scars and support the breast you will receive a special dressing, which will later be replaced by a special supportive bra.
For breast reduction operations Dr. Christoph Jethon recommends a 1-day stay in one of the comfortable rooms. Smaller breast reduction procedures can also be performed on an outpatient basis.
Checklist for the operation:
- General anesthesia
- Duration of surgery: approx. 3 hours
- possibly liposuction
- 1-day clinic stay recommended
- in individual cases outpatient stay possible
What should I pay attention to after the operation?
The incisions made during the breast reduction and the relocation of the nipples mean, as with any other operation, that you will experience discomfort in the breast in the following days. Common accompanying effects are swelling and bruising, but these are not a problem and disappear again after a few days. A numb feeling in the nipples may also occur; this also subsides.
When sleeping, you should avoid any positions that put pressure on your breast; a slightly elevated supine position is ideal.
In the coming 6 weeks you should also refrain from all sporting activities and from any other physically strenuous tasks that stress the chest muscles, e.g. household chores, and also wide-ranging arm movements.
Sauna visits can also impair the healing process of the scars and tissue, so you should avoid them. However, you can resume sedentary office work after about one week.
Checklist for the period after the operation:
- Adopt a breast-friendly sleeping position (supine)
- Avoid physical exertion such as sports / housework for at least 6 weeks
- Do not shower or expose the upper body to water contact in the first week
Healing process of a breast reduction and aftercare
Only a few days after the operation Dr. Christoph Jethon performs a follow-up examination; this also serves to change the dressing. Since your breast is particularly sensitive in the time after the procedure, you will also receive a supportive special bra to protect the breast itself as well as the scars and tissue.
After about two weeks Dr. Jethon will already remove some of the stitches so that you are socially presentable; and after another week all remaining stitches. The scars are still noticeable for some time afterwards, but over time they continue to recede and fade. To support the healing process, you should not do sports or heavy lifting for about six weeks after the operation. After approximately six months you will be able to admire the final result of your breast reduction.
Checklist for aftercare:
- Change of dressing after a few days
- Wear special bra
- Removal of some stitches after 2 weeks
- Removal of remaining stitches after another week
- no sports and no heavy lifting for six weeks
- avoid tight clothing
What are the costs of a breast reduction?
As a rule, only approximate costs can be given for surgical procedures, since the price is individually determined by the effort as well as the duration of the procedure and the necessary overnight stays in our PraxisClinic Jadore.
An overview of our treatment prices can be found in our price list.
Breast reduction for men
The male breast can also be affected by gynecomastia and thus appear feminine. It arises from deposits of excess fat in overweight and obesity. Dr. Christoph Jethon also offers chest correction by means of liposuction for men – further information can be found here.

Did you know?
- Each breast consists of a portion of glandular tissue and a portion of fatty tissue. While the glandular portion is genetically determined, the fatty tissue portion is strongly influenced by your dietary habits. If you lose weight after the operation, the breast can also lose tension/volume. The closer you are to your ideal weight before the operation, the more satisfied you will be with the long-term result.
